Gated Blog Tour and Review!

Gated by Amy Christine Parker:
She thought the evil lived outside the walls. She was wrong.

Amy Christine Parker's deliciously chilling prose creates a fast-paced, nerve-fraying contemporary thriller that questions loyalties and twists truths.

In the Community, life seems perfect. Lyla Hamilton believes she is one of the chosen. Following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Pioneer invited her family to join the Community and escape the evil in the world. They've thrived under his strict, charismatic leadership.
Now seventeen, Lyla knows certain facts are not to be questioned:

Pioneer is her leader.
Will is her Intended.
The end of the world is near.

Pioneer has visions of the imminent destruction of humanity. He says his chosen must prepare to fight off the unchosen people, who will surely seek refuge in the Silo, the underground shelter where the Community will wait out the apocalypse.

Lyla loves her family and friends, but a chance encounter with an unchosen boy has her questioning Pioneer, the Community--everything. She needs time to figure out the truth. But with Pioneer's deadline for the end of days fast approaching, time is the one thing she doesn't have.

Gated by Amy Christine Parker

4.5 stars

Review: Lyla’s life in Mandrodage Meadows always seemed perfect. Pioneer protected the people in the community and it seemed like nothing could ever go wrong. As the impending end is approaching, Lyla begins to question things and the meeting with an outsider leads Lyla to uncover secrets that will destroy them all. I wasn’t sure if I would like Gated. I went into it knowing that it was about cults, which have always fascinated me, but even I know that a subject like this hard to achieve. Especially a subject tackled by a debut author. I was definitely blown away. I read a few reviews while reading Gated and most of them point out a lot of good points about characters and such. This story is a definite thriller. Slow at first, but once Gated picks up, it never stops. Parker does an excellent job of keeping the reading guessing when Lyla will find out Pioneer’s secrets and how. The story is slightly predictable, but once the climax happens, it’s nonstop action.

The main female character is Lyla. Lyla is a good character, but her naivety was just ridiculous. She lived in the real world at one time and I found it odd how she doesn’t remember what junk food tastes like. I’m pretty sure her parents gave her junk food when she was a toddler, so I don’t see why Lyla wouldn’t be able to remember some of these. It just seems odd that she once lived in the ‘real’ world, but is so shocked by how good junk food is. I also found a lot of her choices to be rather foolish. It was easier to like her towards the end, though. Lyla isn’t an extraordinary character, but she is likable and well-rounded. I enjoyed her POV and it was never a dull moment in her mind.

Kick-Butt Heroine Scale: 8.5

The main male characters are Will and Cody. Will is Lyla’s best friend and her intended. I didn’t really care for Will. He was a good friend to Lyla and I saw that, but he as the story progressed he just seemed… off. I tried to like him, but like Lyla I only saw him as a friend to her. Cody is the sheriff’s son and I liked Cody a lot at first. By the end of the story though, he seemed clingy and just annoying. I personally didn’t like either boy very much, but they both had their moments where I really liked them. I just didn’t swoon over these love interests.

Swoon Worthy Scale: Will: 7 Cody: 7

The Villain- Pioneer is probably one of the best villains I’ve come across in YA in a while. He’s methodical, manipulative, and cold. I hate Pioneer with a passion and he is a truly terrifying human being. It was so interesting to see what this mastermind would do. I’m not exactly sure why he started Mandrodage Meadows and I wish that would’ve been touched on. I’m still shocked by the horrors he put these people threw.

Villain Scale: 9.5

I didn’t particularly like Lyla’s best friend, Marie, at first, but as the story went on, I liked her more and more. She really was a good friend to Lyla and it was never a dull moment when they were together. I don’t really have anything to say about Marie’s intended, Brian (I think), he was there, but never really there.

Character Scale: 9

The psychological parts of this story were interesting, but it felt like something was slightly missing. It was never a dull moment for me while reading Gated and I look forward to more of Parker’s works. Gated is definitely a book you don’t want to miss!

Cover Thoughts: I love the cover! It’s so creepy and I’m happy that it actually fits the book.

About Amy Christine Parker:

Amy was born in Pennsylvania and spent most of her early years there. Many of her best memories are of hiding out in her room where she made up elaborate pretend play scenarios most often involving orphaned baby dolls and Barbies dressed in fashions made out of Kleenex.

Amy was always attracted to writing, but she tried a lot of other jobs on for size first before settling into writing full time. At some point or another, she has been a collectible doll-maker, a fondue waitress, an inner city school teacher, and a stay at home mom. Currently she is writing full time and lives in a suburb of Tampa, Florida with her very supportive husband, their two creative and energetic daughters, one absurdly fat orange cat, and two escape artist mice.

Stacking the Shelves #6

Stacking The Shelves is all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual. This means you can include books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts and of course ebooks! Visit Tynga's Reviews to learn more about this weekly meme.

This week I've only got e-books, but I'm still happy that I got books nonetheless! I got a bunch of freebies on my Kindle, but I'm too lazy to look through all the ones that I've bought! I did splurge on some iBooks though for my phone, which will probably take me months to get to, but I'm still excited to read!

iBooks I Bought:
17368120
Saving Wishes by G.J. Walker-Smith
This is a iBook freebie and I decided to snag it because it sounds cute. There seems to be a good amount of positive reviews for this. So, I hope I enjoy it.

10659767
Lovely by Allison Liddelle
It's also another iBook freebie. I can't decide if I'm excited to read it or not. It sounds really good and the premise is awesome, but the reviews for this are very low.

I snagged an awesome $.99 cent deal on a trilogy!

The Immortal Essence trilogy by RaShelle Workman
I'm really looking forward to these books. While I've seen negative reviews for Exiled, I'm hoping that I'll love it!

17774495
Outcast by Adrienne Kress
I also snagged this for a really good price! $2.99! I'm so happy I got this one! I've heard amazing things about it and it looks so good. I can't wait to start Outcast!

 6538757
Rock Chick by Kristen Ashley
I'm not really sure if I'll like this one. It sounds good and I've heard great things about Ashley. It was only $.99 so, of course, I had to snag it.

Netgalley/ ARCs:

Somebody Up There Hates You by Hollis Seamon
I'm really excited to give this one a shot. Thank you, Algonquin Books!

Destroy Me by Tahereh Mafi

Destroy Me (Shatter Me, #1.5)

Destroy Me by Tahereh Mafi

1.5 in the Shatter Me trilogy

5 stars

Destroy Me follows Warner, the villain of Shatter Me, who may not be such a villain after all. Warner is recovering from his near-fatal wound at the base. His soldiers are disappointed not because he was hurt, but because he didn’t die. Warner must make sure that they don’t rebel against him or the Reestablishment. Warner is becoming more obsessed with Juliette and the arrival of Warner’s father, has plans for Juliette, Adam, and Kenji. He’ll make sure that no mistakes go unfixed and he plans on fixing them. I wanted to read Destroy Me before Unravel Me because it seemed like it would be a key part to the story in Unravel Me. I haven’t picked Unravel Me up yet, but plan to soon (months from now with the schedule I have). Destroy Me in my opinion was far better than Shatter Me. If you didn’t really like Shatter Me, but want to know if this trilogy is worth continuing then pick up Destroy Me. I feel like even though Destroy Me is a novella it really set a bar for where Unravel Me could go. One thing reading Destroy Me made me realize is that I strongly dislike Juliette and her voice, but more on that later. Mafi is known for her purple prose, which either I love or hate. I have a rollercoaster ride of emotions toward Mafi’s writing. I can never decide if I truly like her writing or not. This novella proved to me that Mafi can definitely write. She can write not only beautifully, but she can also write about a character that I’m actually invested in and care about. This is both a pro and con. Why is it a pro? Because there’s no doubt in my mind that I’ll enjoy Mafi’s future works. Why is a con? Because the character I’m emotionally invested in isn’t the character that has a POV in the books aside from this novella. This also makes me hesitant about the trilogy now that I’ve realized this. I definitely loved Destroy Me, but I’m not sure if I’ll love Unravel Me because I only liked Shatter Me enough to want to continue the series. At the same time, Destroy Me has me excited to pick up Unravel Me and see if Mafi has progressed in her writing.

The main male character is Warner. I have been Team Warner from the start. I, of course, have a thing for the bad boys. I do like Adam though, but Warner is where it’s at and if Juliette doesn’t end up with him, I’ll gladly take him. In Shatter Me, we had a glimpse of his dark past, but I think it was brought to light more in Destroy Me. I adore Warner and find his character be complex and one that I would gladly read more about. I’m also looking forward to Chapter 62 in Unravel Me because I love Warner.

Swoon Worthy Scale: 9

So, while Juliette isn’t exactly present in this novella, her diary entries are. Remember how I briefly mentioned that I didn’t like Juliette. Well, her journal entries made me realize how much I hate Juliette because she is nothing but annoying purple prose. As I’ve said, Mafi can write, but Juliette brings her writing down and makes her seem childish. I am not the biggest Juliette fan as it is, but these journal entries didn’t make me like her any more. They didn’t make me hate her more, but I just feel brief passes of sympathy towards her. She’s okay and nothing to brag about. In fact, if she didn’t have this power she would be just another victim of the Reestablisment.

Kick-Butt Heroine Scale: 7

The Villain- Destroy Me introduces the actual villain in this world. It isn’t Warner or the monster we think him to be, but the monster that shaped Warner, his father. I have a strong dislike towards his father and his cold-bloodedness towards killing innocent people makes me uncomfortable. This is what I like in a villain. As a human, he’s terrible, but as a villain, he’s what writers should try to aspire to.

Villain Scale: 8

There were a few good quotes in Destroy Me that I really liked and feel like leaving in my review:
“I want to leave this worn body behind, but my chains are too many, my weights too heavy. This life is all that’s left of me. And I know I won’t be able to meet myself in the mirror for the rest of the day.”-Warner
“It’s a strange thing, to never know peace. To know that no matter where you go, there is no sanctuary.”- Juliette’s diary (which is surprising that I actually liked a quote from a passage)
I definitely recommend Destroy Me for fans of Shatter Me and skeptics as well. I think this novella will make or break your decision to give Unravel Me a shot.

Cover Thoughts: These covers are so gorgeous. I really like this one, but not as much as the Unravel Me cover and definitely not as much as the Ignite Me cover (which is absolutely gorgeous).

The Meeting by Richelle Mead

The Meeting (Vampire Academy, #1.1)

The Meeting by Richelle Mead

1.1 in the Vampire Academy series

5 million stars

Remember when Rose and Dimitri first met in the first installment of Vampire Academy? Remember how awesome that was? No, well how about reading this from Dimitri’s POV? Doesn’t that sound amazing? Guess what! It was amazing! So amazing! Dimitri Belikov finally gets his own POV in something written by the lovely, Richelle Mead. It was literally the best thing to read if you’re waiting for The Fiery Heart and need something to reenter yourself into the world of VA and Bloodlines.

Dimitri is forever going to be one of my favorite fictional heroes ever. He is so swoon worthy that it should be a crime. I absolutely love him and only gifs could describe my deep love for Dimitri Belikov.

I'm an array of emotions when it comes to Dimitri Belikov.

Swoon Worthy: My scale is broken. Dimitri Belikov is my definition of swoon.

Rose Hathaway threw Dimitri’s eyes is so… amazing to see. I’ve always wondered what Dimitri thought when he first met Rose and it’s so interesting to see his perception of her. Can we just have VA written in his POV, but only the steaming parts? Rose is one of my favorite heroines and she will always be my favorite to go back and read about.

Kick-Butt Heroine Scale: 10

You can read this online here. Seriously read it! It is so short, but totally worth it and you will not be disappointed!

What Really Happened in Peru by Cassandra Clare & Sarah Rees Brennan

What Really Happened in Peru (The Bane Chronicles, #1)

What Really Happened in Peru by Cassandra Clare & Sarah Rees Brennan

First in the Bane Chronicles

2.75 stars

In the first installment of The Bane Chronicles we learn the reason behind why Magnus Bane isn’t allowed in Peru. The first part in the e-book series follows him in about 200 years time of dragging his warlock friends around Peru. Confession time: I haven’t read anything by Cassandra Clare since the sixth grade which was about five years ago. I first read The Mortal Instruments when it was a trilogy and so had half the kids in my Honors English class. It was my classes’ favorite book series and we all enjoyed discussing it. I, in all honesty, don’t think that the Mortal Instruments should’ve continued because I was satisfied with where City of Glass finished. I do plan on eventually finishing the series, as well as starting the Infernal Devices (because I recently purchased Clockwork Prince). I was really planning on reading this e-book at all, but I was stalking Twitter and saw that it was the Pulse It read and was currently free, so I took the chance to read it. I wasn’t sure what to expect going into this. Yes, I used to love the Mortal Instruments, but that was a really long time ago and I was wary about Clare’s writing and if I would still enjoy it. I did enjoy What Really Happened in Peru, but to a certain extent. I’m sure fans of the Mortal Instruments series absolutely gobble this up, but I was very easily detached from the story at times. The story is broken down into four parts: 1791, 1885, 1890, and 1962. I really liked how the time periods were broken up and it was more of short stories within a novella. I thought it was a pretty well-done idea. The story did get choppy at times and it was easy to stop reading and get distracted by something else. *cough Twitter and Instagram cough* I personally can’t decide if I truly enjoyed Clare’s writing or not. There were times when I was well entranced with Magnus and his friends and then others where I was rolling my eyes and just thinking it was a waste of time. I took a lot of notes on this novella, which is really weird because I usually only take a lot of notes if I absolutely hate something, but my notes consisted of things that made me laugh and also things that made me want scream and throw my Kindle at the wall. I truly thought I was going to hate this because not very far in and there was a huge info dumping about Magnus and his language background and blah blah blah. I totally zoned out and I thought I was going to end up hating this. Then the most amazing thing happen, I laughed at a joke that Ragnor made. I mean laughed I was rolling on my bed in a fit of mindless giggles.
“Although, I must speak Prattling Fool, since I can understand you.” - Ragnor to Magnus
Then more giggles ensued.
“I will find whatever chest of absurd clothes you have. And I will bring a llama into the place where you sleep and make sure that it urinates on everything you possess.”Ragnor to Magnus
It’s probably not even that funny to most people, but it really started to make me enjoy the story more. While there are also a few editing mistakes throughout this, I didn’t mind them as much as I probably usually do.

The main male character is Magnus Bane. I’ve always like Magnus and his witty jokes and banter with people can usually brighten anyone’s day, but I didn’t know if I was going to enjoy him in his own little book. I did though. I’ll admit a lot of Magnus’s life is completely out there, but I enjoyed his crazy antics. He made me laugh and I even teared up a bit when he talked about his mom. I do look forward to getting to know more about Magnus Bane.

Swoon Worthy Scale: 8

Ragnor and Catarina were both very charming warlocks that really are fun to read about. All three of them together remind of the Three Musketeers, but with magic. They always make me laugh and Ragnor is probably my favorite character in this novel. He was such a downer sometimes, but he was also so funny and sarcastic. For fans hoping that there will be romance, never fear, Clare has thrown in a romance that will bore you to tears because Imasu, the musician, and Magnus have a very brief relationship and Imasu doesn’t appear very much in the story himself. He’s there, but not there. So it’s not really romance, just infatuation. There’s also that Kitty girl Magnus meets and becomes a fugitive with for a summer romance. It was hardly even there. *shrugs*

Character Scale: 8

One of my biggest problems with this novella is that there isn’t really a plot. It’s a small one, but in all honesty it’s not enough of a plot to be considered one. The writing was also a bit annoying. Sometimes metaphors and uses of imagery were just so out there. This one quote really made me laugh at the fact that it has actually been written.
“She had lashes so long they were almost sweeping her shoulders.”

That is terrible and all it does it make me think she looks like Cousin It. There were some pretty cool things in this book though. There were:

Magnus drunk and Magnus being such a terrible musician that llamas started to migrate away from the town. I’ll probably continue this series as some point, but not at the moment. This book is fun, but it has its flaws. It isn’t completely horrible, but I wouldn’t really recommend it unless you really do enjoy Magnus or the Mortal Instruments.

Cover Thoughts: I like it. It’s pretty cool and I don’t know something about it just seems to fit Magnus and his personality. I wouldn’t have put New York City as the backdrop though since it was nonexistent.
