Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Obsidian (Lux, #1)

Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout

First in the Lux series

Can I give it 10 million? 5 stars

My blurb will probably never do this book justice, but that doesn’t mean I’m not going to try. So Obsidian is about a book blogger named Katy. Katy moves to a little nowhere town in West Virginia to make a fresh start while still coping with her father’s death. Things start looking up for Katy when she sees her hot next door neighbor, Daemon Black. Daemon is hot, but he is also stab-worthy. The minute he opens his mouth Katy and him are at it like cats and dogs. He’s arrogant, egotistical, a know-it-all, and a big jerk. But Katy befriends his twin sister, Dee. Daemon does everything in his power to make sure their friendship doesn’t happen, but he fails and Katy begins to notice things about Daemon and Dee that might be a little off. Daemon and Dee are aliens! A type of alien race called the Lux or Luxen in plural that are able to control light and are in essence made of light. Every time Daemon uses his powers around Katy she lights up like a shining disco ball and the Luxens arch enemies are looking for them and they are coming after Katy. The thing about Obsidian is that I knew I would love this book before I even read it. I’ve been through hell and back in search of this book. I searched high and low and finally, one unsuspecting day I walk into Barnes & Noble in hopes of spending my gift card that my uncle gave me for Christmas. I bought a ton of books from the contemporary section and then I delved into the paranormal section, which is like my home in some ways at bookstores. I saw this book in all its green and Daemon Black beauty along with its sequel, Onyx. I did what any overactive reader did and pulled those books off the shelf faster than the speed of light see what I did there? I’m a genius. You’re probably wondering what the hell this has to do with the book, but for me buying this book was just as much as an experience as reading Obsidian so I decided to tell you guys all about it. On to the actual review now! I’ll start with the characters and then hop into my general thoughts at the end.

The main female character is Katy. Katy is a book blogger!

How awesome is that?! Not only is she a book blogger, but her blog felt real when she talked about it. I related to Katy in so many ways. I just felt like I understood her and it was refreshing to come across a character in a book that felt a lot like me. It’s hard to explain into words how much I connected to her. I haven’t lost any close relatives like Katy, but I’ve lost people. I also loved how real and genuine Katy’s love for books felt. When I read Bloom by Elizabeth Scott, the main character was a supposed book lover who worked in the library, but I hadn’t once felt her love for books. I’ve never felt that when reading book so it never felt genuine, but Katy’s love was and her excitement reminded me of mine and I could relate to her a hundred percent. Is it Katy perfect? No, she actually pissed me off a few times and I was screaming at her. Then I would realize me screaming at Katy reminded me of when I scream at myself in my head after I do something completely idiotic and boneheaded. Katy is one of my favorite heroines.

Kick-Butt Heroine Scale: 10

The main male character is Daemon. Daemon is such an ass, but he’s a good ass. I can’t help but swoon over him. I’ve developed an obsession with Daemon Black and I think he’s outweighed my love for Dimitri Belikov. That’s saying something since I love Dimitri. There’s something about Daemon that is charismatic and charming even when I want to punch him in the face. I regret nothing when it comes to being obsessed with him because while he is an ass I still love him. I also read some chapters from his POV and understood why he was such a jerk to Katy and to be honest it made me love him more.

What obsession would it be without a bunch of pictures?

Swoon Worthy Scale: BROKE MY SCALE

The Villain- I enjoyed the villain aspect in Obsidian. Did the villain scare me to death and give me the creeps? Slightly, but after reading about hardcore villains like Devina from the Fallen Angels series, most villains don’t scare me. It takes a lot now. YA villains don’t scare me hardly ever. These villains were creepy, but not scare me to death scary. They weren’t sadistic, but they were psychopathic in alien terms. I enjoyed them.

Villain Scale: 8.5

I loved Dee. She was such a good friend and she was a ball of energy, literally and figuratively. She was fun to read about and I liked her friendship with Katy. Lesa and Carissa are pretty cool girls, but they aso seem like they were just thrown in to be Katy’s friends. Ash, Andrew, and Adam are all very different, but Adam is my favorite out of these triplets. Ash is OK, but I don’t like her and I was cheering for Katy when she did to Daemon and Ash in the cafeteria.

Character Scale: 9

Armentrout has a way of writing that just draws me in and ensnares me for hours. I can read her books all day. I literally wanted to, but it was my best friend’s party and I wasn’t missing that. Armentrout is a great writer. She’s not lyrical like Laini Taylor or heart wrenching like Lucy Christopher, but she has that flare that just makes you want to read more and not stop. I love writers like that. They make reading so much more enjoyable. A lot of times if you have that style I could probably overlook so many mistakes. I didn’t find any mistakes in Obsidian because I was too in love with this novel to care. This novel is amazing and I love, love it! This novel has been all over the blogosphere and anyone with a computer has seen it and if you know me I’ve probably talked about it around you (I did so even with my crush that’s how serious I am about this book). This book is worth reading. I could go on and talk about everything, but I don’t want to. This book deserves to be read. So read it! Like NOW! Please?

Cover Thoughts: AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee that cover! Pepe Toth is so hot! He makes this cover. The lightning in the back is pointless and I only care about Daemon. He's just so YUM!

  1. I fell just as hard for Daemon. And I'm loving Pepe Toth as him as well! Some great eye-candy! They should have pictures of him interspersed throughout the book. I'm all for a graphic novel. I agree with all of the above. Great review Sarah!

  2. Hhahaha I love that Daemon broke your swoon-worthy scale! It looks like your gift card definitely came in great use with how much you ended up loving this book. I hope you enjoy Onyx just as much! Great review Sarah! :)

  5. I couldn't even finish this book! He hated Kat for no other reason that to make them fall in love later. And Dee acted like she had never seen a human before! I didn't find the Twilight references amusing either! And when Kat discovered they were aliens, I thought she would act a little surprised but instead she was like, "that's so cool!" Really? is that how you'd react if you find out your best friend is from Venus?

    1. I understand why a lot of people didn't like Obsidian, but I loved it. I do agree with you on your points though.
