Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead

Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy, #1)

Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead

First book in the Vampire Academy series

5 stars

St. Vladmir’s Academy is home to one of the most breathtaking races on earth. They hide vampires, but not just vampires from the old tales told to scare kids. These vampires of Moroi and they gifted in magic and have Dhampirs to protect them. Rose Hathaway is Dhampir and her best friend is Lissa Dragomir. Lissa is the last remaining heir in the Dragomir line and they’ve been on the run, but they are dragged back to St. Vlad’s by the alluring Dimitri Belikov. A new guard and instructor who ignite passions from Rose and make her want more. But they have to be careful because the Strigoi never rest and they want Lissa. Vampire Academy is hands down probably my favorite YA vampire series. I just love these books. Vampire Academy starts off with an interesting scene where we meet the alluring Dimitri and then starts to decline, but picks back up about 75% of the way through is nothing but action and suspense that will have you on the edge of your seat.

The main female character is Rose. Rose is by far one of the best YA characters I’ve ever come across. She’s kick ass, strong, and cunning. She knows what she wants and how to get it. Rose is complex. She seems like a party girl and serious protector to Lissa, but she’s more. She’s also a good friend. I love her bond with Lissa and how she’s able to get inside her mind. It’s complex and I was taken aback at first, but I think it’s an interesting concept and Mead pulls it off flawlessly.

Kick-Butt Heroine Scale: 10

The main male character is Dimitri. I love Dimitri. He’s the most amazing male I’ve come across in YA. I’m sticking by that statement until someone better comes along, which would take a lot to sway me. He’s hot, smart, courageous, and funny at times, did I mention hot? Ahhh Dimitri… He turns me into a pile of mush. I become a clamoring pathetic mess when I talk about him and I can barely function plausible and good ways to describe him to people. Dimitri turns me into a school girl. Although since I am in high school, I’m a school girl, but this is different. It’s middle school fan girl and those are crazy and unstoppable. I’m not a crazy Dimitri fan, but I do have a slight crush on Dimitri. Who am I kidding? Dimitri is my YA husband. I’m going to shut up now before I lose all credibility.

Swoon Worthy Scale: Broke my scale

The Villain- I thought the villain was very well done. I’m not going to spoil anything because I’m sure there are people that haven’t read this series. I encourage you to leave your computer at this moment and go buy the series. It’s worth it. The villain wasn’t all a shock, but when you’re caught up in the moment like I was it was. I didn’t sit and think about who was who and possible plots. I was speeding through this book like it was a life source and without it I would die.

Villain Scale: 8

I love the relationship between Lissa and Rose. They are best friends and pretty much like sisters. I liked how Mead portrayed Rose going into Lissa’s mind and being able to experience what she was seeing or feeling or doing. It was fascinating and I couldn’t stop reading. Christian is such a cutie and I love him. Of course not nearly as much as Dimitri, but Christian holds his own special place in my heart.

Character Scale: 9

This book is amazing. It’s one of my favorite books ever and the start to my favorite YA series. I love this book. I regret waiting so long to read it. I had bought this book when I was in the fifth grade and didn’t read it until seventh grade. What was wrong with me? I can’t believe I waited so long, but it made waiting for Last Sacrifice less torturous because I didn’t have to wait long. I’m coming back to redo my old review because it was terrible, but I don’t think I’m making it better because this is a fan girling mess of me swooning and babbling. If you haven’t read this book READ IT! If you have read this book, but haven’t finished the series please do because it’s worth it. Plus they are making a movie!!!!!!!!!! Dreams come true and now me and my mom are happy, but I don’t think any of the current actors out in Hollywood would do Dimitri justice. Let’s go for unknown and hot!

Cover Thoughts: I like it, but to be honest it doesn’t grab me. I certainly don’t love the cover, but I don’t hate it.

  1. Ha! I love this series so much. I'm with you on the cover, but all you have to do is read page one and you're sunk for the whole series.

  2. If Twilight hadn't ruined any other vampire books for me... I might read this series. BUT! I can't seem to like anything but Twilight!
