The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin
The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin
First in the Mara Dyer trilogy
5 stars
Mara Dyer just woke up from an accident. An accident she can’t remember anything about. She moves away from the town she’s always lived in and as she starts a new school. She doesn’t know if she’s crazy or a killer or both. The last thing she wants or expects is a relationship especially with the school man-whore. I really loved this book. I’m not sure what caused me to feel this way, but I was sucked in a couldn’t put it down. The writing was choppy at times, but I was still sucked in. There were a lot of time gaps, but that is to be expected in Mara’s predicament.
The main female character is Mara. It is made clear to the reader that Mara Dyer is not her real name but a pseudonym. Mara was a brilliant character. She was smart, but didn’t know she was smart. She was also extremely sarcastic and I loved her constant banter between her and Noah. I feel sorry for Mara, but I must know what happens next. She's pretty self-centered, but I wouldn't expect anything less from someone with psychological problems.
Kick-Butt Heroine Scale: 7.5
The main male character is Noah. Noah is a real “asscrown”. An asscrown as Mara puts it is, “I mean an asscrown. The crown on top of the asshat that covers the asshole of the assclown. The very zenith in the hierarchy of asses.” Noah is a jerk, but at the same time he has his sweet moments and there are times I like him and times I wanna slap him.
Swoon Worthy Scale: 6
The Villain- Is there a villain? I don’t think there’s a villain. At least not a villain intent on hurting Mara, but there was a bad guy.
Villain Scale: 4
Mara’s brothers play a big part in her life especially Daniel. I liked her brothers, but I wish we would have seen more from Jude. Mara’s friends, Rachel and Claire, even though they don’t play a big part as characters making an appearance they do leave a mark on the story. Jude- I think someone is trying to steal Noah’s asscrown thrown. Is it wrong that there were times when I wanted to hit Mara and Noah with a stick and hope it would make them smart?
I would make my stick longer.
Character Scale: 8
The quote I put in Noah’s section was my favorite quote, but they had a lot of funny quotes; which is surprising for such a dark-toned novel. The ending… WOW! That ending was so good. I can’t wait for The Evolution of Mara Dyer. This book was just such a good read and I recommend it. You may not like it, but at least you can say you tried it.
Cover Thoughts: I love the cover. I think it’s so artistic and cool. I’m not sure why they are in water, but whatever the reason it’s still a good cover.
Wanna see my thoughts on Noah and Mara's First Meeting from Noah's POV?
Here it is
