Heart of the Dragon by Gena Showalter
Heart of the Dragon by Gena Showalter
First in the Atlantis series
5 stars
Grace Carlyle has always felt this empty void that she’s constantly trying to fill. When her brother goes missing she decides to go to the forests of Brazil and search for him. Near dehydrating and starvation, Grace stumbles upon a spring/cave and discovers the world her brother has been searching for - Atlantis. But with discovering Atlantis comes death. A death carried out by Darius en Kragin, one of the fiercest of the dragons charged with protecting Atlantis and killing anyone who enters the Mist. For some reason Darius can’t bring himself to kill Grace and for the first time in three hundred years feels and sees things again. I really enjoyed this book. If I had to put it down it drove me insane with wonder about would happen next. I had loved Ms. Showalter’s first two books in the Lords of the Underworld series and was looking for the third one at the library and I had really wanted to read this book. Since they had this book, I happily went home with it and I’m so glad I read it. The world created sucked me right in and the characters were so interesting and fun to read about.
The main female character is Grace. Grace was hilarious and her thoughts and comments made her a very enjoyable character. Even with a sword-wielding Darius ready to kill her she was still able to come up with witty comments that made me laugh even in an intense situation. I love characters that are able to do that because they make everything so much more enjoyable.
Kick-Butt Heroine Scale: 8.5
The main male character is Darius. Darius went from an unfeeling person to someone that you just wanted to hug because you felt so bad for him. Darius was definitely a swoon worthy hero and he was just another interesting character that I enjoyed.
Swoon Worthy Scale: 9
The Villain- I first thought Javar was the villain. His name was similar to Jafar from Aladin that I couldn’t help it.
So of course I kept think Javar was gonna turn out like Jafar. Javar turned out not to be a villain and the person that did turn out to be the villain was a real scumbag.
Villain Scale: 7
Character Scale: 10
I was just blown away by how much I liked this book. I liked it more than Lords of the Underworld. *GASP* I know shocking, but I’m a sucker for Atlantis stories and since I haven’t come across many of them when I do find them I go into crazy mode. Even the little side love story between Alex and Teira was adorable. Now I really want to finish the Atlantis series. I hope the next time I go to my library they have them.
Cover Thoughts: Darius is sexy… but I don’t think they guy really looks like how I pictured him to look, but I still like the cover and the effect it creates.
